Yesterday, President Obama made official the move to rescind the previous administrations “global gag rule” also known as the “Mexico City Policy”. This is a great victory not only for women’s rights, but also for the fight against sexually transmitted diseases (HIV/AIDS especially) and other pathogens such as malaria. The Boston Globe had some good coverage of this particular policy during the Bush administration.
I touched on this subject briefly in a previous post and I have to say, I’m quite happy with this particular move by the Obama administration. Now we can finally go into the fight against STD’s with a full arsenal and hopefully save many many more lives. With any luck, President Obama will continue to make changes such as this to the benefit of many not just here at home but around the world.
This being said, we must continue to be vigilant and provide the Obama administration with constructive criticism when necessary so as to ensure that the best most effective policies are addressed. If we’re going to change things for the better, we’re all going to have to be involved.
